An interesting link about Hermann Helms: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermann_Helms

Without a doubt, Hermann Helms is a unique personality in the history of chess, and especially in the United States!!!

Hermann Helms (1870-1963) “the dean of American chess”, was one of the greatest journalists in the history of American chess and an attacking chess player of national master caliber. Through his tireless writing, he influenced chess from the days of Wilhelm Steinitz, the first official World Champion, until the era of Bobby Fischer. Though born in Brooklyn, Helms spent much of his childhood in Germany and Canada, the latter being the place where he was first introduced to chess. After returning to the United States, he played for the Brooklyn Chess Club and was a two-time New York State Champion, earning a national master rating and defeating such American legends as Harry Nelson Pillsbury and Frank Marshall. Helms’ greatest skill, however, was as a chess writer and organizer. In 1904, at the Cambridge Springs International, he was the first person to issue daily chess bulletins. Helms is probably most famous for publishing and editing the American Chess Bulletin (along with Hartwig Cassel) from 1904 to 1963, a period of 59 years, until his death in 1963. His other notable contributions to chess included writing a chess column for the New York World Telegram, the New York Evening Sun, and the New York Times (for over 50 years) and for the Brooklyn Daily Eagle (for 62 years, from 1893 to 1955. This is the record for the longest-running uninterrupted chess column under the same authorship). He died in Brooklyn, one day after he reached his 93rd birthday. He was instrumental in directing Bobby Fischer to the Brooklyn Chess Club. In 1951, a woman by the name of Regina Fischer wrote a letter that was received by Helms, asking for chess opponents for her 8-year old son. Helms answered the letter and was promptly responsible for getting him into organized chess. The boy’s name was Bobby Fischer. He won the New York State championship in 1906 and 1925, and represented the United States in five cable matches against Great Britain (1897, 1902, 1903, 1908, 1909), compiling a record of 2 wins, 2 losses, and 1 draw. In 1936, at age 66, he took 2nd place in the New York State championship, behind Isaac Kashdan. He was the first to broadcast chess games over the radio (WNYC). In 1954, he was awarded the International Arbiter title at the age of 84. As an organizer, he helped to coordinate the tournaments of New York 1924 and 1927, both of which were major grandmaster events, and edited the tournament books for both. The USCF proclaimed him “Dean of American Chess” in 1943, and is considered one of the greatest, if not the greatest, chess journalists in history.

Following the news of the death of Stanley H. Chadwick, with an excellent biographical note:

July 20, 1943

The Brooklyn Daily Eagle from Brooklyn, New York · Page 9

Stanley Chadwick, 72, Architect Poughkeepsie, July 20 Stanley Hathaway Chadwick, architect and former resident of Brooklyn, who was one of the founders of the Correspondence Chess League, died here Sunday at his home, 13 Cedar Ave. He was 72 and for the last eight years had been plant engineer in the factory here of Smith Brothers, manufacturers of cough drops. Mr. Chadwick moved 20 years ago to this city from New York City where for many years, following his graduation from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute in 1889. He had been associated with various architectural firms. When he came here in 1923 he designed a foundry for the De Laval Separator Company, as well as two buildings for the Federal Bearings Company. Keenly interested in chess. Mr. Chadwick became a member of the Brooklyn Chess Club in 1899 and as its secretary arranged numerous International matches which were played by cable. For many years he was a member of the American team in these matches. He was the first president of the Correspondence Chess League which he helped to organize in 1909 and was former chess champion of Poughkeepsie.

Then you can see 3 newspaper clippings. In the first the Underhill name appears in the section of the Class B Tournament. The second shows Khasdan as the winner in the absence of a round. And in the third, you can see the final standings of the tournament, where it appears Khasdan as champion, and Hermann Helms as runner-up (AT AGE 66!!!), both unbeaten (the game between the two ended in draw, but Khasdan won all other games, and Helms made other 3 draw).
