DESCRIPTION

Pawn against Queen

by Harrie Grondijs

Rijswijk 2013

One of 35 numbered/signed copies

Grondijs, Harrie (and others): Pawn against Queen.

Rijswijk, Rijswijkse Uitgeverij Eigen Beheer (RUEB), 2013. Orig. softcover. 108 pages. Three-colored text, all diagrams in color, photos and illustration. Limited edition of 35 numbered copies, signed by the author. This is copy no.13. Size 20.5 cm. 250 grams. In English.

Fine condition: new book.

The book deals with the endgame King + Queen versus King + (Bishop- or Rook-) Pawn on the 7th rank. It consists of following parts:

  • King and a Pawn against the King and the Queen, an essay by Mr. Chapais, from Chapais manuscript (ca 1780)
  • Queen and Pawn Princess, an essay by Alexander Rueb, first time published in magazine Schaakmat, 1954
  • The Queen against the Rook Pawn or Bishop Pawn on the seventh Rank, by A. Rueb, 1950s (first time published many years later by Jan van Reek in small edition)
  • with introduction, postaface, comments and detailed bibliographic index by Harrie Grondijs

From the back cover:

Monsieur Chapais ... knew everything about this ending that one may find in the best of todays text books....

(to A. Rueb's essays): The first part of this essay appeared in the Dutch chess magazine Schaakmat in 1954, its intended sequel remainded in the dark until Jan van Reek identified it in Selman's left papers and published it in a (very) small edition. The two parts are here united and published together for the first time in book format.

Harrie Grondijs wrote many books, his favourite themes are endgame study and the history of chess. I like his books as both the content and form are of high quality. Most of his works are published in low editions, often numbered and signed by the author - this is a reason why Grondijs' books almost do not appear in the market.

These signed editions are often sold out immediately when they are published. I am now listing a small collection of 3 Harrie Grondijs' works, all starting with EUR 1.00 only. All of them are limited editions (to 35, 35 and 37 numbered copies) and all are signed by the author.

So far I know, all of them are OUT OF PRINT - I assume that some of these books will be not available in the market for years. Please visit my other auctions for description of other books.
