Philidor (1726-1795) was the greatest master of the 18th century and the strongest player in the world after his victories against Stamma. His book contains his insights on the strategy of chess with which he was far ahead of his contemporaries. His phrase "The pawns are the soul of chess ..." became a legend. As early as 1749, his first edition of "L'Analyze du jeu des Echecs" was published. L/N 457; van der Linde I, 402.
Condition: Endpaper is missing. yellowed and stained inside. Few pages and plates with defects, partly loose. Binding bumped, scraped and stained. Defects and wear at the spine.
