DESCRIPTION

Manuscripts, Problem tournament 1902.

The Swedish newspaper "aftonbladet" had its fourth international problem tournament in 1902. The tournament was a "three move" competition and it was allowed to the participants to submit as many contributions as they wanted. 102 contributions were received of which a few were retracted.

The tournament had many notable contributors, e.g. Jespersen, Palkoska, Vetesnik, Kondelik, Feigl, Marin y Llovet, Braune, Møller, Pospisil and many more. We have been able to deduce a list of composers from problems published so far. It can be seen in the PDF file associated with this lot.

This lot contains the following original material and contributions from the tournament.

1) 95 (of 102) original problem contributions with solutions. We are able to link 95 problem to the "Original list of contributions". A few "extra" problems are available, but cannot be linked to the list. The names of the composers are not on the list. They were kept secret to the judges.

2) Original list of contributions with notes (in L. Collijn's hand?). The problems are divided in more "ranks" (I-III). Some problems have dual solutions and some have no solution. Problems in rank "I" compete for the prizes. This list is handwritten in ink. One folded leaf, four pages. Each page is 26 cm * 22 cm.

3) Intended list of prize winners (In L. Collijn's hand?). This is the original list of prize winners, as published in Tidskrift för Schack. Later, the list had to be adjusted.

4) Letter from Johan August Ros - (1864-1937) a well known composer and correspondance player - to Collijn, in which he argues for a certain ranking of the prize winners. This letter is in Ros own hand. The original envelope is attached.

Condition: Several problems have bruises, tears, dog ears and penned notes.
