DESCRIPTION

Oldrich Duras

1944 chess book by F. J. Prokop

with 142 games and 73 problems / studies

Prokop, F. J.: Duras vitezi.

Praha, C. A. T., 1944. Orig. paperback. Portrait, 148 pages. First (and only) edition. 23.5 cm. In Czech. LN 3061, Mo 98, Soukup 98a. 190 grams. Book code 520832

Very good: light signs of use caused by storage, no flaws, internally clean and unmarked. The book has never been read as all pages are still uncut.

Oldrich Duras (1882-1957) was one of the strongest Czech chess players of all time, he belonged to the best players of the world in early 20th century. Several times Czech champion, shared winner in tournaments Barmen 1905 (with A. Rubinstein), Vienna 1908 (with Maroczy and Schlechter), Prague 1908 (with Schlechter), Breslau 1912 (with Rubinstein), etc. His last tournament was Mannheim 1914, then Duras never came back to the tournament chess after the WWI.

Duras was a player of the original style - he did not like to learn a theory but he was smart tactician and was very strong in complicated positions. Many of his combinations came into various tactics manuals. Duras is also well-known as a composer of both endgame studies and problems.

The book contains in its first part 142 annotated games of Oldrich Duras, ordered chronologically from Hilversum 1903 to Mannheim 1914. The second part presents 73 problems and endgame studies composed by O. Duras (all diagrammed, with solutions).
