Welcome to my sale of chess periodicals.
The Chess Player's Chronicle, edited by Howard Staunton, Volume III, London 1842.
Original publisher's blind-stamped cloth binding with gilt titles on spine. Spine a little worn at head and foot, otherwise generally good condition. Four pages with hand-written notes,
416 pages including Index. Betts 7-1, LN 6123.
Volume three of Staunton's pioneering chess magazine with numerous games, problems, stratagems, articles, correspondence, lessons, poetry etc. This volume includes many of the games from the De la Bourdonnais v M'Donnell matches, with notes by Staunton and a summary of the overall results.
Although the title page includes the date 1843, this volume actually contains the 26 weekly numbers from May to October 1842, after which Staunton travelled to Paris for two months for his great match with Saint-Amant.
Volume I ran from 1st May to 23rd October 1841, volume II ran from 30th October 1841 to 30th April 1842, and volume III ran from 7th May to 29th October 1842, thereafter volumes were published on a calendar year basis. See Tim Harding's British Chess Literature to 1914, pages 193-194.
