DESCRIPTION

Allen (George): The Life of Philidor. Musician and Chess-Player. With a Supplementary Essay on Philidor as Chess-Author and Chess-Player by Tassilo von Heydebrand und der Lasa. Philadelphia, E.H.Butler & Co. 1863. 1st Public Edition.

Contemporary half leather, very rubbed especially on spine, lower joint is tender. Condition inside is good. Half-title, pp xii, 156. Printed on thick paper with very wide margins, book size is 160 x 235mm. LN 3107. Hagedorn 42.

This book first appeared as a series of articles in the "Chess Monthly" (USA) and in a privately printed edition of 50 copies in 1858. This revised and enlarged edition includes a Supplement by von der Lasa and an Appendix. A printed note opposite the title-page states "A few Large Paper Copies have been printed on French vellum paper, Dutch laid paper, and American toned paper."

I would say that this copy is most likely printed on Dutch laid paper. Also every page is also interleaved with blank pages and occasional ink notes in French have been made on these pages. At the end there are one and a half pages of neat notes. Also opposite the half-title page there is a mounted photograph (perhaps of Allen?) There are two previous owner inscriptions on the front endpaper. These things can be seen in the photos.

Large Paper copies of this scarce book are very rare.
