Johann "Hans" Joseph Kmoch - born in Vienna, was an Austrian-Dutch-American chess International Master (1950), International Arbiter (1951), and a chess journalist and author, for which he is best known. In 1959, he wrote his most famous book, Pawn Power in Chess. He died 1973 in New York City at the age of 79.
