DESCRIPTION

"SCHAAKFESTIVAL TE GENT 1970"

BELGIAN CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP OF 1970

Schaakclub "Jean Jaurès" (Ed.)"Schaakfestival te Gent 1970. Tornooiboek GENT 1970". Nationale Kampioenschappen Schaken, aan de Watersportbaan in de School Neermeerskaai. KAMPIOENSCHAP 1970 te GENT van 13 tot 23 Aug.

Gent, Schaakclub "Jean Jaurès", 1970. Original softback edition. 52 pages. 20,9 x 13,5 cm. In Dutch, and some text in French.

Very good to excellent: Stamps (6 in total) of the previous owner, the famous chess player and chess ex-libris collector, Karel Falleyn. Remains of a detached label in the upper outer corner of the interior of the front cover. Very slight browning in edges. Remains of the contour of a square, on pages 3-4. Maybe on page 4 (it's a blank page and the rest of the square seems stronger on page 4 than in 3) there was an ex-libris that has been removed.

A BEAUTIFUL BOOK ON ALL THE SECTIONS OF THE BELGIAN CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP!!

RARE, VERY SCARCE AND VERY HARD TO FIND!!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belgian_Chess_Championship

"The Belgian Chess Championship is a championship organised yearly by the Koninklijke Belgische Schaakbond/Fédération Royale Belge des Echecs (Royal Belgium Chess Federation). The winner of the championship is awarded the title: Chess Champion of Belgium.

The first unofficial tournaments were organised by the Cercle des Echecs de Bruxelles (the Chess Club of Brussels). In 1920 the "Fédération Belge des Echecs" (Belgium Chess Federation) was established under the supervision of the four principal chess clubs in Belgium at that time: Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent and Liège. The first official Belgian championship was played in 1921. Two titles were awarded: the title of Champion of Belgium and the title Champion of the Belgium Chess Federation. The title champion of Belgium was reserved for players of the Belgian nationality, whereas non-Belgians could win the championship of the federation. A separate Belgian championship for women was established in 1938. In 1970 the Fédération Belge des Echecs was renamed the Fédération Royale Belge des Echecs and from then on there is only one title, the Chess Champion of Belgium."

The Championship of this book is very special in the History of the Belgian Chess Championship, since it was the last one in which the title "Champion of the Belgium Chess Federation" was granted, Title that could be won by non-Belgian players. In Gent 1970 the title of Champion of Belgium was won by Karl Van Schoor with 7 points, and the title of Champion of the Belgium Chess Federation was won by Frits Van Seters with 9 points. In fact, the particular duel in the Tournament between both Champions was won by Frits Van Seters.
