DESCRIPTION

"ALEKHINE CAMPEÃO MUNDIAL DE XADREZ EM PORTUGAL" 1940

By A. Araújo Pereira

Araújo Pereira, Alfredo: "ALEKHINE Campeão mundial de Xadrez EM PORTUGAL". On the front cover is written Campião, and in the Title page Campeão. Although the Google translator gives the two options as valid, it seems that the correct one is Campeão.

Lisboa, Parceria Antonio Maria Pereira, 1940. Original softback edition. 74 pages (portrait of Alekhine after the Title page, and photo of the 1st Simultaneous after page 16, both are not included in the pagination) + Errata sheet + Indice sheet. 18 x 11,7 cm. In Portuguese.

Good: Covers worn, with breaks in both ends of the spine, as well as some foxing stain, especially on the covers, on the Half Title page, and on the pages before and after the photographs. The sheets of the Errata and the Index without cutting in the upper margin. Honestly, due to the kind of fragile paper of that time, I think it's a good copy to bind. PLEASE SEE THE PHOTOGRAPHIC MATERIAL CAREFULLY, BECAUSE IT IS PART OF THE DESCRIPTION!!

Linde - N. 3018.

Very rare commemorative book about the stay of Alekhine to Portugal in 1940, to give 4 sessions of Simultaneous. In the book are present 21 games, and all the names of their opponents of the 4 Simultaneous Sessions.

The 1st Simultaneous Session was played at the Estoril Casino on January 24, 1940, as was blind chess, and after 3 and a half hours of fighting, Alekhine managed to beat all her 8 opponents. In the book 3 games are present. Pages 10-15.

The 2nd Session was played, on this occasion normal, in the Winter Room of the Estoril Casino on January 27, again against 40 opponents, and after 8 and a half hours, Alekhine won 37 victories, 1 defeat and 2 draws. In the book 11 games are present, between them, logically, the defeat and the 2 draws. Pages 15-44.

The 3rd Session was played, on this occasion normal, in the Portugal Room of the Geography Society on February 1, against 40 opponents, and after 5 and a half hours, Alekhine won 28 victories, 3 defeats and 9 draws. In the book 7 games are present, between them, logically, the 3 defeats and 4 draws. Pages 45-73.

The 4th Session was played in the Portugal Room of the Geography Society on February 10, against 8 opponents, and after 3 hours and 45 minutes, Alekhine won all 8 games. This session was special, being with clock, and Alekhine played against the most outstanding players of the previous Sessions, in 4 boards play with Black pieces. No games present in the book. Pages 73-74.
