A textbook of problem composition, the text (1-80) written by Planck with the cooperation of the others. The main chapters deal with, first, beauty of solution (considered the prime feature of a problem), subdivided into "The elegance and subtlety of the key move", The brilliancy and depth of the lines of play" and "The excellence of the mating positions"; second, construction, subdivided into "Possibility of initial position", "Economy", Naturalness" and "Minor requisites"; third the role of difficulty of solution. Other chapters discuss classification, self-mates, and problem tourneys and awards. Illustrative examples in the text also appear in the second part of the work which gives the 400 assorted diagrammed compositions.
