DESCRIPTION

GM Oldrich Duras (1882-1957)

original pencil drawing to his 70th birthday

by unknown author

(was reproduced in Cs. sach 1952, p.52)

Original pencil drawing of Oldrich Duras at the occasion of his 70th birthday 25. I. 1952

Size 13.7 x 12 cm, size of the text part 10 x 5.5 cm. The weight 10 grams.

Good or better:  light general signs of use, light crease at the top. Some writings on the back. The drawing is joined with the text part by a paper tape.

Oldrich Duras (1882-1957) was one of the strongest Czech chess players of all time, he belonged to the world’s best players in early 20th century. Several times Czech champion, shared winner in tournaments Barmen 1905 (with A. Rubinstein), Vienna 1908 (with Maroczy and Schlechter), Prague 1908 (with Schlechter), Breslau 1912 (with Rubinstein), etc. His last tournament was Mannheim 1914, then Duras never came back to the tournament chess after the wwi.

Duras was a player of the original style - he did not like to learn a theory but he was smart tactician and was very strong in complicated positions. Many of his combinations came into various tactics manuals. Duras is also well-known as a composer of both endgame studies and problems.

In another auction, I am offering a photo of Oldrich Duras from ca 1950s.

This drawing was reproduced in the magazine Ceskoslovensky sach 1952, page 52.
