DESCRIPTION

1932 ALTONA "DIE 45 PARTIEN AUS DEM NIEDERELBISCHEN MEISTERTURNIER"

VERY RARE AND INCREDIBLY HARD TO FIND!!

LIM. ED. OF 110 COPIES

(Falk, Harald): "Die 45 Partien aus dem niederelbischen Meisterturnier". (Von 1. - 9. Oktober 1932 im Vereinslokal des Schachklubs "Union", im Boardinghouse des Westens, Altona).

(Altona), self published, (1932). Private hardback binding with label Title in spine. 1 loose page with Crosstable + Title Page + 15 sheets typed on the front, and some of them with diagrams stamped manually on the back. Some diagrams have stamped pieces, forming a position of some of the games on the next sheet, just opposite. 29,3 x 21 cm. In German.

Good to very good: General browning, with a horizontal fold in the middle of the leaves. Some slight notation in pencil, such as the sheet number, the round number, or names of players and any moves in the diagrams.

VERY RARE, VERY SCARCE AND VERY HARD TO FIND!!

This book is a very enigmatic publication. Its former owner states that it is a private publication of 1932. On the other hand, I have not been able to compare it with another copy, so I can not assure 100% that it's original. Searching through the Internet, I have managed to find the following link that sheds light on the enigma of this book: http://ballo.de/schach-zettel-168-187 . In note 175 it is possible to read the following (according to Harald Ballo):

Translation: "Hans-Jürgen Fresen, Bochum, reports about Harald Falk (notes 61, 64, 80 and 119), says that the manuscript printed booklet "The 45 Games from the Lower Elbe Championships, October 1932" was written by Harald Falk. Fresen is in possession of the tournament book, in which a handwritten by Harald Falk endorsed note stating that he has created this booklet in 110 copies. In addition, he has provided five additional copies with an additional page."

My copy does not have (perhaps it had) the handwritten note of Harald Falk stating that he has created this booklet in 110 copies. I only see 4 alternatives: the book is one of the 110 copies and has lost the handwritten note of Harald Falk, the book is one of the 110 copies and not all contained the handwritten note, the book is one of the 5 additional copies with a supplementary sheet (it could be the Crosstable, and perhaps these did not contain the handwritten note of Harald Falk, as it was not one of the 110 "normal" copies), or it might not be an original copy.

I sincerely believe that it is an original document, because of the type of paper, the antiquity that it seems to have, the accurate data of the Tournament on the Title Page, and because the previous owner, person of an irreproachable reputation, says that the book is from 1932. In addition, this book recalls, in terms of "graphic design," the books published by Cordingley, many of them from the 1930s (the first of 1933).

It is possible that the diagrams have been added later, and that is why not all the backs of the sheets have them. But it's just a guess. What is certain is that the calligraphy of the Crosstable and the annotations of the diagrams is identical. So, it is either the calligraphy of Harald Falk, or the person who later added the diagrams and the Crosstable (to complete the original publication).

A separate comment deserves the city of Altona, which was independent, until in 1938 it became part of Hamburg. It is for this reason that in the different sources consulted, Hamburg appears as the city of the publication.
