Up for bids is "The History of Chess, together with short and plain instructions by which one may easily play at it without the help of a teacher," by Robert Lambe. This book was published in 1764, and is one of the earliest books on chess history, including its variants. Quite interesting and accessible information in an erudite and highly collectible work of 148 pages. L/N 176.
The book is in very good condition, with a leather spine and corners, and gilt edging at each. Gilt author's name to spine, as well as the incorrect year 1754 also in gilt, both strong and clear. Modest wear and lightening to spine and corners, with a solid binding. Neat, unintrusive ink and pencil notes of former seller to title page. Contents have moderate occasional foxing and the pages are dampstained at the top half, but with no effect on the text's readability or the pages' integrity. In my opinion, it gives the pages a "parchment" type of look and additional character. The pages are also of a nice texture and thickness.
Payment only by PayPal, plus 5% and the shipping cost. I will e-mail you to confirm the shipping price, which will generally include tracking and insurance. Please contact me with any questions or for additional pictures, and bid with confidence.
