"Theorie Moderního Sachu" by Ludek Pachman. Published in hardback by Nakladatelství in Prague in 1949. First Edition. 207pp. Believed to be in the Czech language, but not sure. The book is in Fair+ condition. The binding is a bit shaky and the outer cover along the spine area is damaged (see scan). The internal pages are all lightly browned from the poor quality paper used so relatively soon after WW2. However, these pages are all inscription free. The page edge block is tanned, from age only. No dustjacket. The rarity of this book is in the penned dedication on the half title page that reads: "Master C.H.O.D.Alexander. With very best wishes from Ludek Pachman. Trencianske Teplice. 18/9/49". The famous 1949 chess tournament at Trencianske Teplice was won by Stahlberg with Pachman in joint second. The key tournament player in respect of the above dedication is the British player Harry Golombek, who came joint 12th. Golombek was a great friend of C.H.O.D and the obvious assumption is that Pachman penned the dedication and asked Golombek to deliver the book to Alexander, when he returned to England. Alexander, of course, was famously never allowed to visit Eastern Europe after the war, due to his wartime secret work with Turing and others at Bletchley Park. Further scanned images are available on request. Approx.unpacked weight: 340g. Postage by Royal Mail within the UK: £3.00. Postage to Europe and elsewhere will be extra. Please ask me for details.
