DESCRIPTION

Fedor Bohatirchuk

by Ludek Pachman

1944 chess book about his visit in Prague

(version with 83 pages, not in LN)

Pachman, Ludek: 8 partii velmistra Bohatyrcuka.

Praha, publisher not stated, 1944. Orig. softcover with paper label pasted on front cover, as issued. Mimeographed on cheap paper with text on rectos only. 1 blank leaf, title, pages 9-83 with breaks, 1 blank page, 1 blank leaf. 14x20 cm. 110 grams. In Czech. Not in LN (LN 3314 is the 35-page version), not in Soukup, Mokry 97.

Fair to good: front cover is soiled, rear cover a little soiled. Spine has ca 2-cm tear at the bottom. Internally light signs of use, text is OK with no writings..

The title means in English: 8 Games of Grandmaster Bohatirchuk. The book contains 8 by Pachman annotated games played by master Bohatirchuk against strong Prague chess players (Pachman, Prucha, Kottnauer and others) at the occasion of his visit of Prague in May 1944. It is the only contemporary publication devoted to Bohatirchuk.

Fedor Bohatirchuk (*1892 Kiev - 1984 Canada) was one of the world's best players between wars. Reputable scientist, USSR champion in 1927, participant in all 3 Moscow tournaments 1925, 1935, 1936.

The book has confused pagination, which includes plain versos and also leaves that were probably intended to publish but at the end were not published. In some copies were these intended leaves replaced by color plain ones but in some copies (like our one) remains the place empty - see jumps after pages 9, 21, 29, 37, 47, 55 and 73 below.

Here is the exact pagination of the book - the even pages are blank: 1 blank leaf, title, 9, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 25, 27, 29, 33, 35, 37, 41, 43, 45, 47, 51, 53, 55, 59, 61, 63, 67, 69, 71, 73, 77, 79, 81, 83.

The book is quite complete - the pagination shown above is the way, how it was issued.

The book was issued in 2 versions, one with 35 leaves and another with 83 pages but the content is the same - the 83-page version was issued with incorrect pagination and different text formatting.

This copy is the 83-page version. In another auction, we are offering also the 35-page version.

I read somewhere that edition of the book was 20 copies only - this is not true, the circulation of the book is not known. However, it is a hard-to-find item.

Please visit our auctions – we offer 4 scarce older books about or by Bohatirchuk, plus two more as Buy It Now - that's practically all that was published about/by him.
