DESCRIPTION

"ŠACHOVÉ LISTY" 1900-1902

COMPLETE RUN OF ALL 3 VOL. IN ONE BOOK!!

RARE, VERY SCARCE AND VERY HARD TO FIND!!

Štefanydes, J. V. (Ed.): "ŠACHOVÉ LISTY". Ročník I-III. Rok 1900-1902.

Praze, J. V. Štefanydes, 1900-1902. Pretty leather quarter binding with marble covers, and title and gold engraving on the spine. Title page + 188 pages + III unnumbered Index pages + Title page + Half-Title page + IV unnumbered Index pages + 184 pages + 160 pages (as published, without Title, Half-Title or Index pages). All volumes are quite complete. Bound without covers. 24 x 16,5 cm. In Czech.

Very good to excellent: Minor defects for a magazine over 100 years old. Some rubbing on the covers, especially at the corners, edges and on the spine. Slight marking with pencil (probably easy to erase) in virtually all problems and games and very few small annotation on some page. Hardly any stains, mentioning only the Title Page (more important) and the first 2 pages of 1900, as well as very slight defects on page 160 of 1902. Nice rectification in problems 662 and 693. Famous ex-libris inside the front cover. Honestly, a magazine very difficult to find in an excellent condition for its age.

Linde - N. 5984, Soukup 3, Mo 236, Di Felice 2073.

The information that appears next is offered by Karel Mokry, without a doubt the best seller that I have known in my life, in an auction in EBAY on December 5, 2010:

"It is a successor to the Ceske listy sachove, which ended in 1899. The magazine changed its name and passed completely into the hands of J. V. Stefanydes. Numbering of games and problems continues on those in Ceske listy sachove - between 1900 and 1902, 168 annotated games (numbered 257-454) and 778 problems and endgame studies (numbered 657-1434) were published, but the studies were sporadical only, the problems absolutely prevailed.

The owner and publisher of the magazine, J. V. Stefanydes, was during the whole period also the editor-in-chief. The other editors were J. Pospisil (problems) and K. Traxler, both for the whole duration of this journal. From no.2 to no.7 in the 1900 volume, also J. Chocholous is mentioned as an editor.

The journal was a monthly - in the first two years 12 numbers were issued but in 1902 only ten. The last double issue, 9-10/1902, came out on 29 December 1902 and Stefanydes announced in it the termination of the publication. On p.156 he promised that in January 1903 the last double-issue would come out but this never took place. The last (1902) volume thus has 160 pages and title page / index were not issued.

In volume 1900 the six unnumbered pages consist of the title page (2)p and index (4)p. There was no half-title in that year, it only appeared in vol. 1901, in which the 8 unnumbered pages consisted of the half-title (2)p, the title page (2)p and the index (4)p.

The number of copies published is not known but one can get some idea of it from Stefanydes’ announcement of the termination of the journal: among other things he complains that 200 subscribers failed to pay the subscription (no. 9-10/1902, p.156). This is its English translation:

Nos. 11 and 12 of Sachove listy will be issued, if possible, in January 1903. There will be no volume IV. In Bohemia the opinion prevails that what is published by a private publisher must be distributed free of charge. Between a small volume of lyrical poems and a chess journal there is, however, among other things, a big difference in the cost of production. The editor and publisher, after toiling unpaid for the whole year would face the extra labour of trying to find 200 new subscribers at the end of each year. That is why, after seven years, the Czech chess monthly will stop its publication and Czech chess players will have to subscribe to a foreign journal. They really will have to subscribe to it - they are not going to get it free."
