Praze, Tiskem artistického ústavu J. Stolaře, 1898-1899. Hardback cloth binding with gold Title in spine. Half-Title page + Title page + IV unnumbered Index pages + 192 pages (missing the plate of František Moučka, by the way Soukup in his bibliography from 1947 does not mention any plates) + Title page + 188 pages (as published, without Half-Title) + III unnumbered Index pages. Bound without covers. 23 x 16 cm. In Czech.

Good: Binding somewhat rubbed, more on the back cover, and some small stain on both covers (mainly at the bottom). Some rubbing on the covers, especially at the corners, edges and on the spine. Slight marking with pencil (probably easy to erase) in virtually all problems and games and very few small annotation on some page. Some slight stain (one more important in the upper outer corner of page 101), some foxing, some wrinkles, and some pages with vertical fold in the middle. Famous ex-libris inside the front cover.

The information that appears next is offered by Karel Mokry, without a doubt the best seller that I have known in my life, in an auction in EBAY on December 5, 2010:

"Ceske listy sachove is the first printed chess magazine in Czech language. The main editor is Jan Kotrc - alone in 1896-1898 and together with J. V. Stefanydes in 1899. The problem section was edited by Josef Pospisil during the whole run 1896-1899, Karel Traxler was among editors in 1896-1897.

The magazine is published monthly with issues of 16 pages each. In 1896 only 10 issues came out because the publication only started in March. The other volumes have 12 issues. In the four volumes, 256 games and 656 problems were published.

The complete run appears scarcely in the market. The edition is not known, it was possibly about 500 copies of volumes 1897-1899 and about 300 copies in 1896. All these numbers are not confirmed but they are based on information taken from contemporary sources like chess columns of Zlata Praha, Svetozor etc. According to Prokop: Ceskoslovensko ve svetovem sachu (Praha 1935, p.79), the magazine had about 300 subscribers. Max Wellner in his booklet: Kratky prehled pet a triceti normalnich otevreni sachovych (Domazlice 1897) informs that the magazine has currently (it means begin of 1897) 203 subscribers.

J. V. Stefanydes was ready to continue publishing in 1900 when he find at least 220 subscribers till Christmas 1899 (as noticed in chess column of Zlata Praha, volume 1899, issues Nov 24 and Dec 22). He probably did not find them as the magazine ended in 1899 (though Stefanydes was editor of another magazine, Sachove listy, which is considered as a successor of Ceske listy sachove)."
