Editor Lars Grahn started his private magazine in 1970 and had ten years later more subscribers than Tidskrift för Schack. Later Grahn's Schacknytt inspired GM Yasser Seirawan to found his magazine Inside Chess. GM Bent Larsen was a regular contributor on non-profit basis.
