DESCRIPTION

A vintage 'CHESS, Sutton Coldfield' chess clock. In working order. From looking online the consensus of opinion is that this type of clock was made in England in the 1940s. I have no definite information on the accuracy of this but I would say 1940s to 1950s as the era it was made. It has been stored for a number of years. On pressing the right lever, the left clock started immediately. On pressing the left lever, the right clock did not start immediately BUT it has subsequently been operating properly over several hours of testing. I therefore assume that the internal mechanism was simply a bit stiff from lack of use. I cannot, however, offer any warranty on the item but I am quite happy to send anyone who is interested in bidding a short video of the clock and the levers being pressed to show that I am being truthful in my description. Cosmetically the clock is in Good conditon. There is some loss of white paint around the clock faces and the top covers (see scanned images) which may well be able to be restored with a little touch up paint. The clock faces and glass frontage are clean. The knob on the left hand clock is brown while the other is black. The only real fault with the clock is that the hour hand on each face does not accuratley match up to the minute hand on each hour. Therefore, for example, the hour hand is not set on the correct hour when the minute hand is on 12. This depredation may be easily remedied, but I do not know. I also note that the left hand clock red flag is stuck in the upright position (and therefore does not fall on the hour mark). I assume from the above (hopefully minor) faults that the clock may require a small mechanical adjustment. Common sense suggests that clocks of this vintage, that have not been used for a long time, would benefit from an internal clean or oiling. The clock was formerly the property of the Sutton Coldfield chess club, where the clock was sold from! Further scanned images (or video) are available on request. Approx.unpacked weight is 705g. Postage by Royal Mail within the UK is £3.00. Postage to Europe and elsewhere will be extra. Please ask me for details.
