DESCRIPTION

"O. S. BERNSTEIN. 64 PARTIES D'ÉCHECS"

BERNSTEIN BIOGRAPHY

By J. Cena (1968?)

THE BOOK CONTAINS A VERY IMPORTANT LETTER!!

Cena, J.: "O. S. BERNSTEIN. (Grand maitre international d'Echecs.) 64 parties d'échecs". Présentées ou annotées par J. CENA.

(Paris?), self-published, (1968?). Original softback edition. 237 pages (including Portrait of Bernstein and Title page). 21 x 13,5 cm. In French.

Very good to excellent: The book is protected by a transparent plastic dust jacket. The lower part of the spine is very slightly detached. Some tiny spot of foxing on the outer edges of the pages. A slight wrinkle affects virtually all pages (including the front cover) in the lower outer corner. Otherwise, the book is in excellent condition.

Very interesting link in Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ossip_Bernstein .

The letter that accompanies the book has great value, as it provides important information about the Author and the possible date on which the book was written!!

On the Internet it appears as a possible publication date 1963 (since Bernstein died on November 30, 1962), but it does not seem likely, because if it had been so, Guisle would have offered this book to his good friend and client, Monsieur R. Huguet, much before 1968. And the letter is dated January 31, 1968. Even in some Internet sources the 70s appear as the date mostly accepted as the publication date. However the letter refutes this. So it seems that the end of 1967 or January 1968 is the most likely date.

In addition, investigating the Author also sheds some light on the subject.

In the letter Guisle mentions that Author J. CENA is actually a pseudonym, and that the real name of the Author is C. JEAN. Guisle refers to him as a young player and printer (at the end of the letter Guisle mentions that the Author is his own Editor, although the book is sold at the Guisle Chess Library). The fact that he is young also suggests that 1963 is an early date for him to write the book, and that 1967 or 1968 are more likely dates. It is not easy to find on the Internet data of the enigmatic C. JEAN, but with patience and tying up ends, it is finally possible to find some interesting data.

LETZELTER does not seem to be the Author (although his name is Jean-Claude and he can confuse us), since in 1964 he played the French Championship, according to ChessBase, and Guisle in the letter says of Claude Jean as a player who in 1968 already begins to do things well.
Claude (first name) Jean (last name), in ChessBase appears for the first time in 1966 in the 41st French Championship.
