DESCRIPTION

Sachovy tyden 1937-1938

published by Frantisek Fric in Prague

The only Czech chess weekly

All published

Sachovy tyden 1937 + 1938 (all published).

Praha, 1937-1938. Uniform contemporary cloth bindings, spines lettered. 238 + 216 pages. Size 31 cm. The weight 1,910 grams. LN 5995, Soukup 14, Mokry 248. In Czech.

  • volume 1, 1937: 238 pages (41 issues)
  • volume 2, 1938: 216 pages (38 issues)

Fair to good: bindings a little soiled, edges and corners somewhat rubbed. Rear outer joints a little cracked. Most leaves have (as almost always at this magazine) light traces after horizontal centre fold. Leaves with pages 171/172 and 173/174 are swapped, but everything is complete. Some pages are a little/somewhat stained but it is nothing serious. Page 14 in volume 2 is reinforced by transparent paper tape in length ca 8 cm (text complete). There are some small reparations by paper tape at margins - I found about 10 in all. Otherwise OK, text with no writings.

The magazine was published in newspaper form without covers and it is quite complete - title/index pages were not published, nor any plates.

The first volume has 41 issues (25 April - 30 December 1937). The second volume has 38 numbers (6 January - 15 September). The double-issue 37-38 from September 15 was the last issue of the magazine. Another issue was announced on the last page of the magazine for 30 September, but this never appeared.

The Sachovy tyden is cosidered due to the quality of its content as one of the best Czech chess magazines ever. Some of its information cannot be found in other literature, e.g. the complete reporting on the international tournament Prague 1937 (1. Keres, 2. Zinner, 3.-4. Eliskases, Foltys, 12 participants), inclusive all the games.

The Sachovy tyden is the only printed Czech chess weekly and appears seldom in the market. A prominent chess journalist Frantisek Fric, its editor and owner for the whole period, died in a concentration camp during World War II.
