DESCRIPTION

First year of Steinitz's famous Magazine.

The magazine was the brainchild of Steinitz, a Bohemian Jew and the first official chess World Chess Champion.

Changing his name to William when he became a US citizen in 1888, Steinitz held his championship title from 1886 to 1894, when he was defeated by Emanuel Lasker.

Steinitz is often mentioned as the father of the modern, scientific treatment of chess and a profoundly original, opinionated player and author.

As a chess thinker and writer Steinitz was unsurpassed, and there is a goldmine of his insight, and some invective, within these pages. His personality here illuminates the game of chess.
