                                     The first original American book on the game of chess 

 

Philidor: (William Blagrove, Editor): The Elements of Chess; A Treatise Combining Theory with Practice, and Comprising the Whole of Philidor's Games, and Explanatory Notes, New Modelled; and Arranged upon an Original Plan. Printed for W.Pelham, No.59 Cornhill, Boston, 1805.

First and Only Edition. Later half leather, spine rubbed, top joint partly split o/w G. pp 200. Without  frontispiece and p.201-208  (Appendix). Last few pages with paper repair at top with loss of a few letters. The paper is browned throughout especially towards the end.

Hagedorn, Benjamin Franklin and Chess in Early America, No.2 - "This work was probably edited by William Blagrove, a nephew of the publisher, and an enthusiastic amateur. This is the first original American book on the game of chess (and second published in America on chess). It has become very rare."
