DESCRIPTION

Three privately bound collections. 1. A selection of vintage "CHESS, Sutton Coldfield" magazines that are the specific issues relating to the death of famous players. Thus, we have issues for April 1942 (featuring the loss of Capablanca), followed by the issue for Aug 1944 (Menchik), followed by the issues for Feb and Nov 1945 (both Marshall), followed by the issues for March 1946 and April 1947 (both Alekhine). Clearly some previous owner wanted to start an "Obituaries" collection as this word plus "Chess" are impressed in gilt along the volume's spine. All the magazines are complete (no covers) and in Good clean condition with a strong vertical crease on each. 2. Second, we have five issues of the "British Chess Magazine" from the year 1921 that have reports and seven annotated games from the recently started world championship match between Lasker and Capablanca. The issues are: April, May, Aug, Sept and Nov 1921. The magazines are in Good, clean condition. The amateur binding is only in Fair condition with pencilled notes on the front endpaper, handling marks and a heavily scuffed outer appearance (see scan). Finally, we have a volume similar to the above BCM one but for the years 1929-30. This volume has the following BCMs: Jan, Feb, March, April, July, Dec 1929 plus Jan 1930. The BCM index for the year 1928 is also present. Therefore, between the above two volumes there are a total of twelve vintage 1920s BCM magazines. The binding and condition of the 1929-30 volume is similar to the 1921 volume. Included with this lot are some papers found inside the BCM volumes that include a vintage John Jaques scoresheet, two Empire Social Chess Club subscription recipes, a review note for a P. Wenman book and two other pages (see scan). An usual little collection. Further scanned images are available on request. Approx.unpacked weight is 995g. Postage by Royal Mail within the UK is £3.00. Airmail postage to Europe and elsewhere will be extra - please ask me for details.
