Contemporary brown half leather, spine rebacked and laid down, covers a little rubbed. Frontispiece (browned), pp xx, 380. BEST EDITION, including the 37 page Bibliographical Catalogue, and 4pp letter to Bell's Life attacking William Lewis. LN 668.
The binding is larger than the original work and incorporates blank sheets between most pages, and on many of these, diagrams with stencilled pieces have been placed. This has mostly been done on the large section on the King's Gambit. A previous owner of the book was H.Garrod, whose name is written on the front endpaper. Also included is a letter from his daughter dated 1962 in which she presents the book to someone close to her.
