From the J.W.Rimington-Wilson chess library. Also a "Presentation copy to Sir F.Madden". Sir Frederick Madden, Keeper of Manuscripts in the British Museum and one of the best palaeographers of his day, was led to write an important paper on early and medieval chess pieces in 1832 by the recent discovery of the Isle of Lewis chessmen in Scotland.
