DESCRIPTION

2008 "ALVIS VĪTOLIŅŠ"

Dodot gūtais neatņemams

Dedicated by one of the Authors and G.M. Zigurds Lanka

Lanka, Zigurds & Ķeņģis, Edvīns & Klovāns, Jānis & Vitomskis, Jānis: "ALVIS VĪTOLIŅŠ. Dodot gūtais neatņemams".

(Liepāja), LiePA (Liepājas Pedagoģijas akadēmijas), 2008. Original softback edition. 183 pages including 7 photos in the text. 20,5 x 14,4 cm. In Latvian.

Excellent: Almost like new.

Despite being a relatively recent book, it is practically impossible to find it for sale online.

Includes light biography and "portrait" of his chess style with 6 photographs (pages 8-17), 23 widely commented games, structured by different specialties of Vitolins in the Openings (pages 20-139), 2 Annexes of 2 specific variants of Openings (Petroff 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nxe5 d6 4.Nxf7!?, and variant Poisoned Pawn of the Sicilian 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 a6 6.Bg5 e6 7.f4 Qb6 8.Bxf6 gxf6 9.Be2), and a third and final Annex with a list of Tournaments and results, and 6 crosstables of their victories in the Latvian Chess Championships of 1973, 1976, 1978, 1982-1983 and 1985. In reality he also won in 1977, although the Championship was played by the Swiss System with 46 players. Perhaps, being a very long document, the Authors decided not to include the 1977 Final Classification in the book. It is available at the following link: http://al20102007.narod.ru/ch_repub/1977/ch_lat77.html

An interesting link about Vitolins: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alvis_V%C4%ABtoli%C5%86%C5%A1

WIKIPEDIA:

"Alvis Vītoliņš (Vitolinš, Vitolins, Vitolinsh) (15 June 1946, in Sigulda – 16 February 1997) was a Latvian chess master.

Awarded the International Master title in 1980, he was Latvian Champion in 1973 (jointly), 1976, 1977, 1978, 1982, 1983 and 1985 (jointly).

His name is attached to the Vitolins Variation in the Sicilian Defence, Scheveningen Variation (1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 e6 6.Bb5+) and the Vitolins Variation of the Sicilian Defence, Dragon Variation (1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 g6 6.Bg5 Bg7 7. Bb5+).

He committed suicide by jumping onto the frozen ice of the Gauja river from a railway bridge in 1997."
