1923 PARDUBICE
8th CZECHOSLOVAK CHAMPIONSHIP
By Amos Pokorný
Pokorný, Amos: "Sbírka partií VIII. sjezdu Ústřední Jednoty Čsl. Šachistů v Pardubicích od 5. do 18. Srpna 1923". Poznámkami opatřil Amos Pokorný.
Brno, self published, (1924). Original publisher softback edition. 64 pages (including Title page). 23,2 x 15,8 cm. In Czech.
Good to very good: Slightly soiled and worn covers, with some slight fingerprint spots. At the top edge of the Title page is a date stamp. In taking photos I discovered something unexpected: the only important "flaw", and really curious, is that there is a total absence of staples (despite the existence of evidence) which makes some sheets are loose (it is possible that "pressing", perhaps the whole book can be loose (I have only seen 2 or 3 groups of 4 pages). But on the other hand, it is certain that there is no problem, so common, of staple rust. I honestly think it is a "binding" problem, with an easy solution for a professional. Inside in excellent condition.
L/N 5359, Soukup 81, Mokry 109.
Here is an excellent description of Grandmaster Karel Mokry:
The book is a collection of games from the 8th Congress of the UJCS (Czech-, since 1919 Czechoslovak Chess Union). Presented are all 66 games of the Master tournament, today considered as the 8th Czechoslovak championship (1st Walter 8/11, 2nd Pokorny 7.5, 3rd Vanek 7, 12 players each other). In the second part of the book follow 50+ games of other congress tournaments, mostly annotated as well. Index of players and 8 crosstables of all congress tournaments.
It is an uncommon book even here in the Czech Republic. Exact edition of that book is not known, I would estimate that only ca 200-500 copies were published. Author, well-known Czech master Amos Pokorny, was uncertain if publish the book or not. He was afraid of an economical loss after a bad success of the tournament book on the 7th congress of the UJCS in Brno 1921, which was published 2 years ago. Here is what he writes in a summary on page 62:
"I was completely not sure if to publish this book or not, as I knew sad experiences of publishers of the Brno congress book ....And in addition, when I made the last attempt and an invitation to subscription was published in all chess columns, I got only less than 20 pre-orders. The only thing that saved its publication was an uncommon willingness of a Prague chess patron, who warranted to order 100 copies for Prague...."
By the way, this „Prague chess patron“ is not named in the book but from other sources is known that his name was Vaclav Kautsky, real chess lover and possibly the most important person for chess life in Czech countries in the first quarter of 20th century (organizer of Prague 1908, one of founders of the UJCS and of the chess club Dobrusky in Prague etc).
