DESCRIPTION

"101 AUSGEWÄHLTE SCHACHAUFGABEN"

RARE, SCARCE AND HARD TO FIND

By J. Kohtz and C. Kockelkorn (1875)

Kohtz, Johannes and Kockelkorn, Carl: "101 ausgewählte Schachaufgaben", von J. Kohtz und C. Kockelkorn.

Braunschweig und Leipzig, Goeritz & zu Putlitz, ca. 1875. IV (including Title page) + 156 pages. Private flexible cardboard binding with golden title on the spine, and with the outer edge of the pages tinted. 17,5 x 13 cm. In German.

Good: Quite scratched binding on the edges, especially on the corners and on the spine. Very light smoky smell, mainly near the outer side, although to perceive it I had to get as close as possible. Ex-libris (inside front cover) from former owner, Italian collector Mr. Pellegrini. The interior is very clean, with very few and very slight foxing spots on a few pages, only slightly more visible on pages 16-17. A tiny mark (almost difficult to see. Before taking the photos it went unnoticed) next to each diagram. Just a slight pencil notation (probably easy to erase) on page 42. Honestly, the book is pleasant to have in your hands, and is structurally in excellent condition.

An important early collection of chess problems. Johannes Kohtz (1843 - 1918), and Carl Kockelkorn (1843 - 1914) were German chess problem composer and founder of the new-german logical school.

L/N 2433, Kieler Schachkatalog 6849.

Kieler Schachkatalog 6849 represents the print year of 1875? and lists two further editions by Haering and Löbbecke. These are the 3 editions mentioned in the Kieler Schachkatalog:

- Kieler Schachkatalog 6848: Braunschweig, Haering, 1875.

- Kieler Schachkatalog 6849: Braunschweig und Leipzig, Goeritz & zu Putlitz, ca. 1875. Book of this auction.

- Kieler Schachkatalog 6850: Braunschweig, Löbbecke, (1875).

In the 31 editions of the Klittich-Pfankuch Auktion that I know, 2003 November - 2006 June, and 2008 November - 2021 June, only 6 copies have been auctioned, 3 of the edition "Kieler Schachkatalog 6848" (1 of them will be auctioned at the end of June auction, bound together with 2 other books. Curiously, the mentioned reference from the Kieler is wrong), another 2 of the edition "Kieler Schachkatalog 6850", and only one of the edition "Kieler Schachkatalog 6849" (of the book of this auction), being its final price 159,97 EUR.
