"101 AUSGEWÄHLTE SCHACHAUFGABEN"
RARE, SCARCE AND HARD TO FIND
By Fritz Hofmann (1886)
Hofmann, Fritz: "101 ausgewählte Schachaufgaben", von Fritz Hofmann.
München, M. Rieger’sche Universitäts-Buchhandlung, 1886. IV (including Title page) + 70 pages + 1 Schlusswort page. Beautiful private quarter hardback binding with gold print on spine. 20 x 14 cm. In German.
Good: Quite scratched binding on the edges of the spine, with slight cracks at the top. The Title page has 1 small break in the middle of the outer side edge, as well as 2 cracks at both ends next to the spine, and it is practically only joined in the "binding stitch bottom seam", although very fragile. It is almost certain that over time (even before shipment) it will be completely loose. Very light smoky smell, mainly near the outer side, although to perceive it I had to get as close as possible (at a normal reading distance, for a normal nose like mine, it is totally imperceptible). Ex-libris (inside front cover) and small pencil annotation probably easy to erase (at bottom edge of last printer page, after Schlusswort), both from former owner, Italian collector Mr. Pellegrini. The interior without writings or marks, with very few and very slight general foxing and browning. Just a slight pencil notation (probably easy to erase) at the top edge of Title page. Honestly, the book is pleasant to have in your hands, and is structurally in excellent condition.
L/N 2469.
The author excluded those that are more complicated from the selection of the problems. The task "is easy for the solver to accomplish, who has achieved safety and practice in solving the two and three moves."
Inside the diagrams are numbered from 1 to 100, although the solution to problem 101 does appear in the solutions. How is that possible? The mystery is solved by checking that solution 101 corresponds to the Problem on the Title page.
At auctions it always reaches prices above 100 EUR. Even, in the 65 Klittich-Pfankuch Auction, sold for a Total Price 369,15 EUR.
