DESCRIPTION

"PROBLEMI KARLOVAČKOG MEĐUNARODNOG ŠAHOVSKOG TURNIRA. GOD. 1912."

ABSOLUTE RARITY, SCARCE AND EXTREMELY HARD TO FIND

By Izidor Gross (1913)

Gross, Izidor: "PROBLEMI KARLOVAČKOG MEĐUNARODNOG ŠAHOVSKOG TURNIRA. GOD. 1912."(SA DODATKOM.) PRIREDIO : IZIDOR GROSS.

Karlovac, Knjigotiskara Dragutina Hauptfelda, 1913. 32 pages, including Title page and last unnumbered page. Beautiful private quarter hardback binding with gold print on spine. A curious detail is that the entire book is printed on whiter and better quality paper than that of the Solutions section. 22,9 x 15,6 cm. In Croatian.

Very good to excellent: Binding in excellent condition with minimal friction on the edges, somewhat more visible on the spine. Very small wrinkles, barely noticeable. Very slight break affecting pages 3-6 in the lower part of the spine. Inside in excellent condition with only a kind of rectification, rather subdued, in diagram 26 on page 22, indicating that the queen is not black, but white. Ex-libris (inside front cover) and small pencil annotation probably easy to erase (at bottom edge of last unnumbered page 32), both from former owner, Italian collector Mr. Pellegrini. Overall, the impression is that the book is in excellent condition.

L/N 2622, Kieler Schachkatalog 6194.

Book on the First International Chess Composition Tournament in Karlovac 1912. The book is made up of 4 sections:

- The 44 mate chess problems in 2 moves participating in the Tournament.
- An annex with a selection of 36 mate chess problems in 2 moves composed by Izidor Gross.
- Another Annex with a selection of 16 mate chess problems in 3 moves composed by Izidor Gross.
- And the Solutions section.

Absolute rarity, extremely hard to find. In the 31 editions of the Klittich-Pfankuch Auktion that I know, 2003 November - 2006 June, and 2008 November - 2021 June, a copy of this book was never auctioned.

"GROSS, Izidor, chess problemist (Kislőd, Hungary, 1866 - Jasenovac, 1942). He finished the Jewish religious school in Trnava, Slovakia, and from 1884 served as a singer in places of worship and a religious teacher in several places in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. In 1891 he came to Karlovac, where he married and was the second singer in a Jewish place of worship. He ended tragically in the Jasenovac camp. Since 1892 he has been composing chess problems on his own and the following year he took part in a tournament in Vienna. He received his first recognition in Linz in 1898, and compiled his last chess problem in 1940 and sent it to Tel Aviv; was published in 1950 in Al Hamishmar magazine. In total, he compiled about 350 problems and won 36 awards and recognitions. He received the honorary recognition of the International Chess Federation in Budapest in 1926, and in 1929 he won the first prize in London among two hundred world problem-takers. In 1908 he founded the Karlovac Chess Club and was its first president. He organized the first Croatian problem tournament in Karlovac and then six more (1924-36). He has worked in Karlovac weeklies People's voice, Karlovac, where and edited a chess column, and Karlovac messenger, in the papers and magazines of Shah (Maribor), in which he was also the editor of the problem section, Home and World, Zagreb Tagblatt, Morgenblatt and in some foreign magazines. In 1928 he was elected honorary president of the Yugoslav Chess Federation, and in 1930 the first president of the All-Slavic Correspondent Chess Federation. He is famous in Croatian chess history for writing the first professional book in the Croatian language and for introducing our names for all chess pieces that are still used today."
