Berger, Johann: Theorie und Praxis der Endspiele.
Leipzig, Veit, 1890. Contemporary quarter-leather, spine lettered. First edition. VIII, 416 pages. Signed by E. Schiffers on front free endpaper, dated 1895. Size 22.5 cm. 640 grams. In German. LN 2181.
Good minus: covers somewhat stained, spine somewhat rubbed, corners somewhat bumped. Small crayon marks at the heading of most diagrams (picture). Pages sporadicly slightly soiled, light general signs of use.
The book is possibly from the Schiffers‘ own library. I believe it is his original signature. However, I do not have enough comparisons for Schiffers' signatures in the Latin alphabet, so I do not say it categorically.
Emanuel Schiffers (1850-1904), one of the best Russian players in the last third of the 19th century (second-best after Chigorin for many years), chess teacher, author of the famous textbook Samouchitel shakhmatnoy igry.
