DESCRIPTION

"BRANDENBURGISCHE SCHACHZEITUNG"

1924-1926 COMPLETE RUN

NO LONGER PUBLISHED

Zander, Otto (Ed.): "BRANDENBURGISCHE SCHACHZEITUNG". Organ des Brandenburgischen Schachverbandes. Im Auftrage des Verbands-Vorstandes herausgegeben von OTTO ZANDER, Charlottenburg, unter Mitwirkung von Wegemund, Dr. Lewith, Brennert, Richter, Hartmann, Westphal u. A. 1. Jahrgang (1924) - 3. Jahrgang (1926). COMPLETE RUN.

Berlin, Bernhard Kagan, 1924-1926. Private hardback half cloth binding with gold embossed Title in front cover and spine. 22,7 x 16,1 cm. Interestingly, as can be seen from the photos, the September 9, 1925 issue was published in a slightly smaller (tall) format. In German. Bound without covers (only front cover of number 1 of 1924). No Title Pages or Indexes (I am not aware of them. Maybe as published). Below is a detailed description of the content of each year.

1. JAHRGANG 1924 (individual pagination of each number):

No. 1 Juli, 32 pages.

No. 2 August, 16 pages.

No. 3 September, 32 pages.

No. 4 Oktober, 16 pages.

No. 5 November, 24 pages.

No. 6 Dezember, 16 pages.

In total 136 pages. All present in the Volume of this Auction.

2. JAHRGANG 1925 (continuous annual pagination):

304 pages. All present in the Volume of this Auction.

Pages 33-48 (often missing) contain the "Berliner Grossmeister-Turnier". Gespielt vom 9. bis 17. Dezember 1924. Herausgegeben von Bernhard Kagan.

3. JAHRGANG 1926 (continuous annual pagination):

288 pages. All present in the Volume of this Auction.

This is the year with the most pagination problems, as pages 17-32, 49-64, 97-112, 193-208, and 225-240 are often missing. Why does this often happen? Because those pages are from the "Kagan's Neueste Schachnachrichten". And I suppose that many people will have separated them as if they were from another different publication. However, they do belong to the current "Brandenburgische Schachzeitung". They were contributions (surely for advertising purposes) specific to the "Brandenburgische Schachzeitung", since in fact the original pagination of these numbers changes to adapt to the "Brandenburgische Schachzeitung".

Below I give the exact relationship of "Kagans Neueste Schachnachrichten" 1926. Vol. 6, and its equivalent in the "Brandenburgische Schachzeitung":

1. Extra-Ausgabe 1926. Pages 1-32.

No. 1a, Januar 1926. Pages 33-64. At the "Brandenburgische Schachzeitung" it has pages 17-32 and 49-64. It was actually fully published as part of issues 1 and 2, a kind of editorial gift, perhaps to promote the "Kagan’s Neueste Schachnachrichten".

Sonderheft no. 1 1926. Pages 65-96.

No. 1b, Januar-März 1926. Pages 97-224.

Sonderheft no. 2 1926. Pages 225-256. At the "Brandenburgische Schachzeitung" it has pages 97-112. It was actually partially published (only 16 pages, when the Kagan’s issue contains 32) as part of issue 4, a kind of editorial gift, perhaps to promote the "Kagan’s Neueste Schachnachrichten".

No. 2, April-Juni 1926. Pages 257-320. At the "Brandenburgische Schachzeitung" it has pages 193-208 and 225-240. It was actually partially published (only 32 pages, when the Kagan’s issue contains 64) as part of issues 8 and 9, a kind of editorial gift, perhaps to promote the "Kagan’s Neueste Schachnachrichten".

Meinem hochverehrten und lieben Schachfreunde Herrn Kommerzienrat B. Manasse in Dankbarheit gewidmet. Bernhard Kagan. Pages 321-322.

Jubiläumsausgabe 1926. Pages 323-384.

No. 3, Juli-September 1926. Pages 385-448.

No. 4, Oktober-Dezember 1926. Pages 449-512. Index page 512. No title page issued.

For example, at 57 Klittich - Pfankuch Auction, lot 1332 was sold for € 516,81 (including tax), missing pages 33-48 of the 1924 Berlin Tournament (2. Jahrgang 1925), and pages 17-32, 49-64, 97-112, 193-208, and 225-240 from the year 1926 (corresponding to extra numbers of the Kagan Schachzeitung).

Good to very good: Binding somewhat rubbed, especially on the edges. The most important defect is the Title quite faded on the spine, as well as the condition of the spine that is somewhat wrinkled, perhaps with tiny air bubbles, producing a slight weakness in the spine, although it remains strong and the book is perfectly attached. General browning, stronger at the edges. Some wrinkles (with faint breaks at the edge of too few pages), and some minimal normal flaw for a book this age. Inside without writings.

L/N 6076; Kieler Schachkatalog 46; Di Felice 308.
