DESCRIPTION

"Horæ Divanianæ (A selection of 150 original games at chess....)" by Elijah Williams. Published in hardback by the author in 1852. First Edition. 178pp. Betts 24-3. The book is in Fair condition for its age. The binding is shaky and there are areas of damage and loss to the head and tail of the spine (see scans). Internally there are stamps of the "Dundee Chess Club" and also a London bookbinder (see scan). The pages are reasonably clean and annotation free apart from the odd speck and/or tick here and there. The pages appear to be all still attached to the binding but the gutter shows in several places and I would not guarantee that they will remain so. Rebinding might be the best option or alternatively, keeping the book permanently on a shelf. The page edge block is strongly tanned from age and handling. The boards have faded in places but the gilt lettering is still strong on the front board. For all its depredations this is a rare chess book that seldom comes up for auction. Further scanned images are available on request. Approx.unpacked weight is 300g. Postage by Royal Mail within the UK is £3.00. Airmail postage to Europe and elsewhere will be extra - please ask me for details.
