"The Chess Player's Pocket Book and Manual of the Openings" edited by James Mortimer. Published in hardback by Wyman and Sons in 1888. Fourth Edition (same year as the First Edition). 74pp. Betts 13-28. A small, rare little chess volume from the 19th Century. The book is only in Fair condition as it has been ill treated over the course of its 132 year existence. The boards are damaged and cracked although the front and rear pastedown are holding the cracks together. Internally the book is largely clean and inscription free apart from some interesting pencilled entries that refer to the book being "Bought at Dover, Nov 23/15" (ie. November 23rd 1915) by "E.C. MacDermot" who was at Dover "To see Col[olnel] Littledale". The meeting with the Colonel appears to be regarding "A/C Commission". See scans. It would appear that this book was purchased by a soldier who was on his way to meet a Colonel concerning his future in the English Army during World War One. There are further pencilled entries on the rear endpaper that appear to be references to army officers hospitals in central London. Also, some child-like entries. Did MacDermot survive the horrors? A damaged book but one still with historical interest. Further scanned images are available on request. Approx.unpacked weight is 100g. Postage by Royal Mail within the UK is £1.50. Airmail postage to Europe and elsewhere will be extra - please ask me for details.
