"Morphy's Games of Chess" by J. Löwenthal. Published in hardback by George Bell & Sons in 1878. 485pp. At first blush this volume appears to be a first edition as there is no date other than the 1878 one in it. However, reference to Betts (29-82) shows that the volume was previously published by H.G. Bohn in 1860 and this was followed by reprints in 1869, 1872, 1876 and 1878. Therefore, this is a fifth edition. The book is in Good condition for its age. The binding is good and the book stands straight with no shelf lean. The boards have mild discolouration and scuffing, from age. The page edge block is heavily tanned (see scan). The gilt on the outer boards is still strong although more faded on the spine area. There is a previous owner's name in pen on the front pastedown plus a sticker (see scan). There is an old sellotape repair to the front and rear endpapers. Aside from the above signature the internal pages appear to be inscription and annotation free. There is the occasional blemish (see scan) or speck here and there but all in all the volume presents well for a 140 year old book. There is minimal foxing to be seen.
