The Chess-Player's Companion
By Howard Staunton, Henry G. Bohn, London 1849. Betts 29-134, 510pp
Rebacked with original blind stamped cloth covers with gilt chessboard on front cover. Neat dedication on half-title, excellent condition.
The first edition of the sequel to Staunton's Handbook, this book is predominantly a collection of Staunton's own games, with 129 games at odds and 84 games on level terms with the leading players of the day. The 21 games of The Great Chess Match between England and France of 1843, i.e. between Staunton and St Amant, are also analysed.
Part V of the work is a treatise on the giving of odds, and the final chapter has 19 problems with solutions.
Postage will be charged at cost; Royal Mail approx £3 in UK, £8 economy to Europe, or £13 tracked and signed.
Reductions for additional items and large parcels will be sent by courier which is much cheaper.
