DESCRIPTION

1977 "CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS.

25 years of New Zealand Chess Championships 1952-1977" by O. Sarapu

RARE, VERY SCARCE AND EXTREMELY HARD TO FIND

Sarapu, Ortvin: "CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS. 25 years of New Zealand Chess Championships 1952-1977".

(Auckland), self-published, (1977). Original hardback edition with dustjacket. 162 pages. A curious detail is that it has 2 additional sheets, 1 after page 52, with numbering 51a whose back only contains the word "NOTES", and another after page 66, with number 66a whose back also only contains the word "NOTES". Typescript. 20,5 x 16,5 cm. In English. Limited Edition of 200 copies.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Lusis and Van Manen cite that it is a Limited Edition, although not the number, and that all copies were personally signed by the Author. However, this information does not conform to reality, since I have had 3 copies in my hands (including the one from the current auction), and I can say the following: the 2 copies that I previously sold to a good Spanish friend had safeguards, and in one of the copies the front safeguard was signed by Sarapu, but the other copy was not. As far as I can assure that 1 copy was signed, 1 copy was unsigned and the one from the current auction I cannot guarantee anything about it. Regarding the copy of the current auction it only has the rear safeguard, and the front one seems to have been removed, and although it is not possible to assure anything about it, it seems more likely that it has been torn off because it was blank, since it had contained the signature from Sarapu it would not make much sense to remove it. Also, I can confirm that all 3 copies have the same binding.

Good: The dust jacket has tears and edgewear, and has a protective plastic dust jacket, easily removable, as it is not glued in any way. A couple of marks along edge of page block, contents clean. Book in good condition in a fair dust jacket.

Includes results of all the New Zealand Chess Championships between 1952 and 1977, and the author's games from the 19 New Zealand Chess Championships in which he participated at that time. These have brief notes and usually some information about his opponent.

Ortvin Sarapu was an unrepeatable player. He participated, representing New Zealand, in 10 Olympics, between 1970 and 1992. He was New Zealand Champion 20 times (12 alone and 8 shared), and his last Title was in the 1989/90 edition at 65 years old!!

27. Sarapu, Ortvin
Chess Championships. 25 Years of N.Z. Chess Championships.
s.l.e.a. (Auckland, 1977)

# Hardback 16.5 x 20.5cm 162 pages + covers. 210 games, 4 photos. All games annotated by the author with comments. Limited edition, of which every copy is personally signed by the author. The title only appears on the dust jacket of the book, which has no title page and no print on the outside of the hard binding.#

Ortvin did underestimate the popularity of his first book. Here's a quote from his second, Mr Chess - the Ortvin Sarapu story, "That year (1977) I wrote my book '25 years of New Zealand Chess Championships'. I printed only 200 copies as in my estimation there were not enough customers. In fact I sold more than 100 books overseas and could have sold in all twice as many again over the years. It is now a collectors' item."
