Emanuel Lasker: The Life of a Chess Master
By Dr J Hannak, Andre Deutsch, London 1959. Betts 29-65, 320pp.
Good condition with dust jacket.
Tipped in is page 143 of The British Chess Magazine for May 1959 with a critical review of this book by W H Cozens.
This is a translation, by Heinrich Fraenkel (Assiac), of the 1952 work Emanuel Lasker, Biographie eines Schachweltmeisters.
Whenever referring to this book sellers always make great play of the fact that Albert Einstein wrote the Foreword, and this is no exception. Einstein was not a chess player himself but knew Lasker very well and writes warmly about his intellect, personality and achievements.
The dust jacket claimed that this was the standard work on Lasker at the time, and Cozens's review confirms that this third book in English on Lasker (after the works by Reinfeld & Fine 1935, and Gilchrist 1956) is by far the best.
A book not without its faults but a very captivating biography of one of the greatest chess players, with 102 games presented at relevant moments throughout the story.
Postage will be charged at cost; Royal Mail approx £3 in UK, £8 economy to Europe, or £13 tracked and signed.
Reductions for additional items and large parcels will be sent by courier which is much cheaper
