DESCRIPTION

"ECHIGAN"

Organe de l'ECHIQUIER de GANSHOREN

1957-1958 NUMBERS 1-6. ALL PUBLISHED

+ Free 1 Bulletin of "Cercle des echecs d'Anderlecht"

EXTREMELY RARE. Not present in any Bibliography

Meyer, Raymond (Dir.): "ECHIGAN". Organe de l'Echiquier de Ganshoren. 1957-1958. Numbers 1-6.

Ganshoren, l'Echiquier de Ganshoren, 1957-1958. Original stapled softback edition. Individual pagination of each number: 6 + 6 +10 + 10 + 14 (additional Tournament sheet, "IIe TOURNOI ANNIVERSAIRE 1958" printed on recto only, between pages 2-3) + 12 pages = Total 58 pages. Typescript, printed on both sides, except Number 1 printed on rectos only. 34 x 21,5 cm, except the last bulletin (Anderlecht. See BONUS FREE) whose measurements are 27,8 x 21,8. In French.

BONUS FREE: The latest Bulletin is from the Anderlecht Chess Circle, and has 8 sheets, printed on rectos only. Please see the detailed description of the "ECHIGAN" Bulletin below.

Fair to good: It is possible that number 1 is missing the covers (or maybe it was published without covers, I don't think so), and number 2 has the front cover loose and the back cover is missing. The paper of the covers is somewhat fragile, and most of the covers have some small tears at the edges. Also some cover and some page have some stains or dirt. And the BONUS FREE Bulletin (Anderlecht) has the front cover with the print almost completely faded, although with difficulty it is possible to read "Cercle des echecs d 'Anderlecht", but nothing else is seen. A discreet general condition (mainly on the covers, although the condition inside is reasonably good), although everything is complete and perfectly legible. Please take a good look at the 45 photographs, as they are part of the description. In addition to clearly seeing defects, you will also be able to see valuable information.

Not present in any Bibliography, nor in Di Felice, nor in "Belgian chess publications: an annotated bibliography" (2011), although I do not know if it is in the Corrigenda et Addenda issued in 2016.

AUTHENTIC RARITY IN CHESS BIBLIOGRAPHY.

"ECHIGAN" was the Bulletin of "l'Echiquier de Ganshoren" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ganshoren), of which 6 numbers were published, from May 15, 1957 to March 1958. On April 9, 1958 "l'Echiquier de Ganshoren" was absorbed by the "Cercle des echecs d'Anderlecht", thus ending the publication of the "ECHIGAN" Bulletin. The BONUS FREE Bulletin is the first after the absorption, and I suppose it is already a "joint" Bulletin for the members of the former "l'Echiquier de Ganshoren" and the members of the "Cercle des echecs d 'Anderlecht". But unfortunately I cannot provide more clarity on this issue. Perhaps if the front cover of the BONUS FREE Bulletin were in good condition, perhaps it would be possible to read some information (such as number, year, etc.) that would shed light on the issue. Incredibly inside I have not been able to find this information.

It is practically impossible to find any reference to this Bulletin on the Internet. I have only managed to find one reference (precisely from the Anderlecht Chess Club), which indirectly confirms the "chronology" of the "ECHIGAN" Bulletin. In the following link: http://users.skynet.be/fa011287/historique.html (there is also a version in Dutch: http://www.chessclubanderlecht.org/historiek-van-club-nr-209/) it is possible to read in French: "En 1957 le cercle absorbe « L'Echigan » de Ganshoren." Something maybe that is not true, because according to the BONUS FREE Bulletin (in the middle of the first page), the absorption was on April 9, 1958.

This lot belonged to Armand Luyten (who died in May 1973 at the age of 41), a strong Belgian player, who participated in several Belgian Championships, and was Vice President of the "Cercle d'Anderlecht". Curiously, I cannot decipher that R. Luyten appears in the address on the back cover of the Anderlecht Bulletin. Perhaps a relative.
