DESCRIPTION

Olaus Magnus: History of the Goths, Swedes & Vandals and Other Northern Nations - Historia de gentibus septentrionalibus - CE Erlandssons new-year gift 1996 (signed).

Carl-Eric Erlandsson issued eight new-year gifts 1988-1996, each printed in 99 copies distributed to his chess friends.

This issue contains a reprint of some parts of Historia de gentibus septentrionalibus - an imposing illustrated work about the geography and cultural history of the Nordic countries. The author Olof Månsson was born in Sweden 1490 and became a priest and dean. He is known under his Latin name Olaus Magnus and acted energeticly against the Lutheranism. He stayed in Italy after 1537 where he wrote his impresssive work in 22 books. The first edition in Swedish was issued in four volumes, the first one as late as 1909.

In the 15th book, chapter 12, Olaus Magnus writes about diceplaying and chess. He recommends the parents, who want to give their daughters a respectable marriage, to find out whether their suitots are bad or goods winners and losers in the chess game.
