DESCRIPTION

"THE KNIGHTS AND KINGS OF CHESS"

In English by G. A. Macdonnell (London 1894)

Macdonnell, G. A.: The Knights and Kings of Chess by the REV. G. A. MACDONNELL, B.A., with portrait by ARTHUR HACKER, A.R.A. and seventeen illustrations.

London, Horace Cox, 1894. Original green cloth edition, with gilt spine and upper cover. Portrait (with the tissue guard) + XII + 206 pages + 1 advertising page. 19,2 x 13,2 cm. In English.

Very good: In very good general condition, with very small defects, all of them photographed. The binding is very slightly stained, mainly on the outer edge of the front cover, on the upper outer edges, on the spine (somewhat darker) and a couple of small spots on the upper edge of the back cover. However, the binding is in very good condition. Dirt on the top outer edge of the pages. The front cover is slightly tilted to the right. Former owner's signature on the front safeguard. Some light foxing in the first safeguard. Any casual dust spot. Very slight cracking on pages 96-97 and 112-113. Please note that in addition to the 10 initial photos, there are additional ones at the end of the description.

L/N 2982; Betts 28-3: "Biographical sketches of Blackburne, Zukertort, Mackenzie, Steinitz, Bird, Hoffer, Mason, Paulsen, J. C. Campbell, Kolisch, Mortimer, Gunsberg, Falkbeer, F. Healey ('Kings') and a number of chess enthusiasts of the 19th century ('Knights'); with a selection of anecdotes, and articles on various aspects of the game ('caissana')".

Full of interesting descriptions and anecdotes of the players of that day. The Times: "A book of amusing gossip." Chess Monthly: "Sparkles with fun, epigram, portrait, and caricature from the first page to the last."
