DESCRIPTION

1926 "FANTASIA"

NUMBERED AND SIGNED EDITION OF 500 COPIES

By Hilda P.

P. Hilda (possibly pseudonym): "FANTASIA". Copy 105 of a Numbered and Signed Edition of 500 copies.

Sint-Jans-Molenbeek (Brussel), L. Lielens, 1926. Original softback edition. 160 pages, including Page of Edition numbered and signed, and Title page + Author's Photo (after page 8). 18,3 x 13,4 cm. In Flemish.

This copy is special for the 2 additions:

1- The Errata, which is practically always missing.

2- A small newspaper article (I cannot identify it), which may perhaps add some light to this enigmatic book, although I have not managed to translate it. It is possible to translate it partially, as the Translators identify the text as written in Dutch. By not identifying it as Flamenco, the translation is partially faulty. Although I am not 100% sure in any letter, the text of the press article is:

MIA.

Good: Slightly worn binding, with a damp stain in the lower half of the spine, which does not affect the interior of the book. Loose photo at the top end. Slight cracking between pages 82-83 and 128-129. Small tear on the outer side edge of pages 133-134. The page "piece", after the last page 160, is not cut off. It is an original "piece" used to secure the binding. On page 160 are the solutions to the Frontispiece Problems (pages 54, 68, 82 and 110). Although it is not a copy in excellent condition, but it is still in good condition.

L/N 4462, 44 Serruys & Van Habberney.

"Belgian chess publications: an annotated bibliography", by Henri Serruys & Guy Van Habberney (1st Edition, Antwerpen 2011):

"It is still unclear who the real author was. The preface was by G. Koltanowski. In the book, there is a statement that "all copies are numbered and signed by the author". The copies are numbered indeed, but not signed. An article in the daily De Schelde, Sunday 27/12/1925 mentions that 500 copies have been printed."

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: I have just received information directly from Henri Serruys. In the "Belgian chess publications: an annotated bibliography" Corrigenda et Addenda published in 2016, the information does appear that all copies are numbered and signed by the “author” Hilda P. The real author was probably August Van Geen.

VERY RARE AND SCARCE, AND EXTREMELY HARD TO FIND.

In the 32 editions of the Klittich-Pfankuch Auktion that I know, 2003 November - 2006 June, and 2008 November - 2020 November, a copy of this book was never auctioned.
