DESCRIPTION

Josef Cumpe: Verny Cech

Praha 1943

Czech Christmas Series no.11

with problem no.25 from Natal Mercury 1916

one of only 15 copies

Signed by Miroslav Soukup in Impressum

The rarest books of the series

Cumpe, Josef: Verny Cech.

Praha, Miroslav Soukup, 1943. Orig. hardcover. Frontispiece (Cumpe's 4-mover), title, (72) pages. Size 22 cm. In Czech, with some notes on the problems in English or German. Series Sachove umeni (Czech Christmas Series) number 11. Limited edition of 60 numbered copies, published in 2 versions. This copy has number 8 and it is one of 15 copies, which have problem no.25 from Natal Mercury 1916. Signed by Miroslav Soukup in Impressum. The weight 230 grams. LN (2861), Mokry 87, Soukup 25a.

Very good+ / dust jacket not issued:  covers are slightly faded near spine. Binding is tight, edges and corners sharp, text is clean with no writings.

Limited edition of 60 numbered copies, published in 2 versions, which differ by problem number 25. Part of the books has as problem number 25 a three-mover taken from Natal Mercury 1916 and a note in English. There were 15 of these copies and they probably have the numbers 1-15. The second part of the books has as problem number 25 a three-mover taken from the Zlata Praha 1916. There were 45 of these copies and they probably have numbers 16-60.

This book has number 8 and is one of 15 copies.

The book contains 100 problems by Josef Cumpe, almost all are 3-movers. The book is in Czech, but some notes on the problems are in English or German. Title of the book means „The Faithful Czech“, which does not indicate the author’s nationality but his connection to the Bohemian Chess Problem School.

A reason, why the book was issued in 2 versions is not known. In his bibliography, Miroslav Soukup lists the version with 15 copies under number 25a and the verdsion with 45 copies under number 25, but he does not state which numbers were assigned to which version.

Over the years, I had the opportunity to personally check 2 copies of the book published in 15 copies - in addition to this issue also the number 5. I also had the opportunity to personally check 5 copies of the book published in 45 copies (numbers 19, 22, 30, 41 and one higher number). It is therefore likely that the versiom issued in 15 copies has the numbers 1-15, while the version issued in 45 copies has the numbers 16-60.

See also our Collector’s Corner for further informtion about this book.
