Gudmundur G. Thórarinsson: The Enigma of the Lewis Chessmen - The Icelandic Theory (signed).
The Lewis Chessmen are among the British Museum's in London and NMS's in Edinburgh most popular attractions. Carved over 800 years ago from walrus ivory, they have been bescribed as "the most exquisite collection of ancient chessmen in existence".
Until recently, the best guess among scholars and historians was that the chessmen probably originated from Trondheim, Norway. But in this publication Gudmundur G. Thórarinsson puts forward a compelling new theory about the enigma of the origin of these unique masterpieces. His tantalizing hypothesis - based on circumstantial evidence - is that the Lewis Chessman might have been handcrafted in Iceland by Margét the Adriot at the behest of Bishop Páll Jónsson in Skálholt 1195-1211.
