DESCRIPTION

"THE STEINITZ PAPERS"

By Kurt Landsberger (2002)

McFarland 1st Hardback Edition SOLD OUT

Landsberger, Kurt: "The Steinitz Papers". Letters and Documents of the First World Chess Champion, edited by KURT LANDSBERGER.

Jefferson, McFarland, 2002. Original hardback edition. VIII (including Half Title page, Frontispiece with Steinitz's portrait and Title page) + 325 pages + 16 unnumbered pages on coated paper, between pages 70-71, containing 25 photos & facsimiles (according to McFarland it would be 27, although everything is complete, and it is only a difference of criteria to count the photos) + 8 unnumbered pages on coated paper, between pages 278-279, containing facsimiles of 8 documents in the private collection of Kurt Landsberger (according to McFarland it would be 15, although everything is complete, and it is only a difference of criteria to count the photos). According to McFarland's information the book has 45 photos & facsimiles (42 on glossy plates. The 3 photos/facsimiles on normal paper are the Frontispiece with the Steinitz's portrait, the Landsberger photo on page 7, and the Steinitz photo on page 158), since there is some photograph/facsimile that has been composed with some photos together. 26,1 x 18,3 cm. In English.

Excellent to as new: Practically as new condition. Noteworthy only a slight and small wrinkle at the top of all pages, being more visible on glossy pages.

McFarland:

"One of the greatest of chess masters, William Steinitz (he changed his name from Wilhelm when he arrived in America) is recognized as the first world champion. More exactly (and thanks to the efforts of the editor of this book, Kurt Landsberger) he has been officially acknowledged as the first American world chess champion. Many letters and postcards survive: After years of unflagging effort to acquire all known letters to and from Steinitz, the editor has compiled a remarkable record of Steinitz and his contemporaries. Each letter, postcard, scrapbook item, newspaper or chess magazine article or other writing is described along with details of its location, ownership, and circumstances of discovery. It is then printed, nearly always in full, in English (many are translated from the German by Landsberger).

About the Author:

Kurt Landsberger, born in Prague with the name Steinitz, is the champion’s great-grandnephew. He divides his time between Verona, New Jersey and Delray Beach, Florida.
