DESCRIPTION

"ШАХМАТНЫЙ ЛИСТОКЪ"

1st RUSSIAN CHESS MAGAZINE!!

1859 Complete 1st YEAR

By Viktor Mikhailovich Mikhailov

Михайлов, Виктор Михайлович (Ed.): "Шахматный листокъ (Shahmatnyj listok)". 1859. Numbers 1-12. ПЕРВЫЙ ГОДЪ. 1st Year. (Count Grigory Alexandrovich Kushelev-Bezborodko. Ignatz Kolisch was considered his secretary. Link in English: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grigory_Kushelev-Bezborodko , although the link in Russian is more complete: https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Кушелев-Безбородко,_Григорий_Александрович).

Saint Petersburg, Военной Типографiи (Military Typography), 1859. Private flexible hardback binding with gold Title in front cover and spine. 346 pages, without unnumbered pages 79/80, 189/190 and 225-228. IMPORTANT!! Maybe these pages are from the editorial staff of the magazine "Russkoye slovo" not related to Chess, they are strictly editorial communications from the magazine "Russkoye slovo". They are similar to unnumbered pages 47-48 of this copy. I have added these pages 47-48 in the photo section. For this reason practically all bound copies for Chess Collectors do not contain pages 47-48, 79-80, 189-190 y 225-228, as can be seen in the copy of the National Library of the Netherlands: https://books.google.es/books?id=n89eAAAAcAAJ&printsec=frontcover&hl=es&source=gbs_ge_summary_r&cad=0#v=onepage&q&f=false. These "errors" and "misunderstandings" in the pagination of this magazine were only committed in this first year 1859. In fact the reprint of Moravian Chess does not contain these pages either. Something that indicates that the Chess section has concluded is that at the end of pages 46, 78 and 188 a horizontal line appears as the final "text" in the center of the page, and on page 224 this line does not appear, since after the problem diagrams there is no physical space to maintain the editorial distance of pages 46, 78 and 188. When a number ends in this way (with diagrams and without the dash, or with text and then with the dash as on page 107. I have added this page 107 in the photo section) on an odd-numbered page, this causes the next page to be blank and not numbered, but included in the pagination. That is why pages 24, 108, 126, 158, 224 and 298 are white, without content and not numbered, but included in the pagination. Bound without covers and without Index (maybe as published). I'm not 100% sure, but as a magazine supplement, it almost certainly had no covers or Index, as can be seen in the following link: https://books.google.es/books?id=n89eAAAAcAAJ&printsec=frontcover&hl=es&source=gbs_ge_summary_r&cad=0#v=onepage&q&f=false . Although it was published a front cover (almost sure with number 1, as can be seen in the following link: https://ruchess.ru/upload/iblock/573/57382eac907ebe70e98dab332248f51e.pdf) as a Title page (also the reprint of Mr. Fiala has only this cover. Supplied as a photocopy). 23,5 x 15,5 cm. In Russian.

Good to very good: Remains on the spine of having been unbound from the magazine in which it was published as a supplement. I honestly have doubts as to whether pages 47-48 are original. In number 6 there are traces of a water stain in the upper outer corner. Light pencil annotations on the last page. Some slight foxing and slight and general browning. Otherwise in very good condition for his age.

L/N 6308; 249 Sakharov-2; Di Felice 2406. https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Шахматный_листок_(журнал) .

According to L/N the first 37 issues were published as a supplement to the magazine "Russkoye slovo", although according to Sakharov-2, it was actually the first 41 issues that were published as supplements to the magazine "Русское слово".

A EXTREMELY HARD TO FIND MAGAZINE IN GOOD TO VERY GOOD GENERAL CONDITION.
