Original envelope from the 77th United States Open Championship signed by the winners: Leonid Shamkovich and Anatoly Lein as well as by Pal Benko who shared the 3rd place. The tournament took place in Fairfax, Virginia from August 15 to 27, 1976.
Pal Benko (1928 - 2019) was a well known Hungarian-American grandmaster, participant of two Candidates Tournaments (1959 and 1962), Hungarian Champion in 1948 and eight times US Open Chess Champion, a record. He was also a composer of endgame studies and chess problems.
Leonid Shamkovich (1923 - 2005) was a Soviet born-American grandmaster and chess writer. He left the Soviet Union in 1975, moving first to Israel, then Canada and finally the United States. He won the 1975 Canadian Open Chess Championship, tied for first in the 1976 US Open Championship and wrote several chess books.
Anatoly Lein (1931 - 2018) was a Soviet born-American grandmaster. He emigrated to the USA in 1976 where he finished equal first in the US Open and equal first in the World Open that year. In 1978 he played for the USA at the Chess Olympiad in Buenos Aires, where they won a bronze medal.
