DESCRIPTION

"The Book of the London International Chess Congress, 1899" edited by F. Lord and W. Ward-Higgs. Published in hardback by Longmans Green & Co. in 1900. FIRST EDITION. Limited print of 500 copies. Betts 25-36. 232pp+52pp. The book is in only Fair condition for its age. The covers are stained and faded and the spine area has partially collapsed (see scans). The (rough cut) page edge is grubby looking from age and handling and has two small stains on it. They say you should never judge a book by its cover and this is partly true in respect of this volume because internally the condition improves. The first pleasing thing to note is that the volume was once owned by the 1889 British Amateur Chess Champion, George Wainwright, and his name (and part address) adorns the front endpaper in faded ink. This same page has a tiny nick missing just above the signature, unfortunately. The internal pages are still tightly bound as befits Victorian era craftsmanship. The pages are clean and annotation free apart from several pencilled ticks at the start of games. There are the occasional small smudge or light crease to note on the pages but these are commensurate with age. There is light foxing to the pastedowns and endpapers but the internal games and text pages remain clean. I have given the names of the editors above as their names are quoted in Betts but I cannot locate any reference to them in the actual book. Perhaps they are mentioned in the lengthy (52 page) introduction. Games are given in English descriptive notation. Rare. Further scanned images are available on request. 'Signed For' postage by Royal Mail within the UK is £5.00. Airmail postage to Europe and elsewhere will be extra - please ask me for details. Any questions, please just ask.
